Dr. Ruchi Thanawala Brings Back Smiles

A smile is the best accessory one can carry, believes dentist Ruchi Thanawala of ‘Esthetic’ clinic in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. She helps her patients achieve the billion dollar smile they always aspired for. In an exclusive tete-a-tete, she shares her story.

  • What inspired you to take up dentistry as a profession?

People always ask me that question. Instead of following my father noted surgeon and IVF expert Dr Uday Thanawala’s footsteps, I chose dentistry because I was fascinated with dental science. As a child, I had many dental issues and would visit my dentist often. Unlike other kids, I was never scared of my dentist and looked forward to the visits. I would always be equipped with queries. I am very happy with my choice since this is a challenging but exciting field and I get an opportunity to serve the community.

* Today there are many super-specialty dental clinics in the city. What challenges do you face?

Be good at whatever you are. This is the only key to overcome the challenges of never-ending competition. There are many dental clinics offering treatment at a much lower price but the patient will return to a doctor only when he or she trusts you.

  • What new do you offer in the stream of dentistry?

I offer specialized treatments to change one’s smile. This helps them gain confidence. We offer an option of Porcelin Veneers and digital smile designing. We take pre-operative pictures, work on them and show the pics to the patient. The patient get a feel of how he or she will look after the treatment. We also offer 3D computerized lingual braces.

  • There is a lot of demand for cosmetic dentistry. What does it involve?

Cosmetic dentistry is beautification and enhancement of one’s smile using orthodontics or veneers, crowns, correct protrusion, crowding, spacing diaestemas or improving discoloured teeth.

  • Please share some tips for dental hygiene and care.

Brush twice daily. Use soft tooth brush and a good quality tooth paste. Use mouth wash to rinse after meals. Floss to prevent cavities in between teeth. Water floss is easier and more user-friendly. Visit your dentist every 6 months for professional cleaning.

  • Professional ethics are on the decline in the field of medicine. Please comment.

There are black sheep in every profession. I believe honesty and integrity is very important to foster a healthy doctor-patient relationship.

  • What are your plans for future?

I am happy when my patients are happy. I like to read a lot and constantly update myself about latest trends in the field.
